Your Own Private Paradise
This Eco Casita is a place to escape civilization and feel one with nature. It is 40 minutes to an hour from León depending on how you travel but it feels like a world away. You constantly hear the mesmerizing sound of the surf. In the evening, you add to that, the sounds of the crickets and the spectacular view of the stars and all cares are wiped away.
This lovely 3,000 square feet large beach front property with 107 feet beach front with trees that are natural to the area is in a secluded section of Salinas Grandes beach which has a handful of private residents, mostly owned by Canadians. There is a turtle sanctuary in the lot beside the property. The lot on the other side of the house is currently vacant.
The turtle laying and hatching season is the second week of September through the second week of January. Neighbors gather at dusk on the beach in front of the cottage to help release the baby turtles. In September and October, the eggs are gathered by volunteers after they are laid by the turtles, categorized and set up for incubation. There is the opportunity to volunteer with the turtle sanctuary, assisting Jorge who is the caretaker for the turtles. For more information on the turtle sanctuary, go to http://www.tortugavivero.com/
The beach sand is volcanic so is a darker color. The beach and entrance to the ocean is smooth sand. The warm waters in this area stay shallow for a good distance into the ocean. The ocean conditions change throughout the day with calmer times and other times with higher waves which give an amazing boogie board ride. (There are 4 boogie boards that come with the house along with other beach/yard/board games). Pelicans and other nautical birds accompany the high tide as they dive in to capture their dinner. Fishermen frequent these waters and it is possible to go fishing with them or purchase fish/shrimp and lobster for great prices from them down the beach or have it delivered. The local surf camp came to visit my cottage and shared that this is an excellent strectch of the beach for surfing, especially during the swell in the spring time.
The house is fully solar-powered with 10 solar panels, a solar 8 square meter fridge/freezer and an electric cooler for drinks. Naturally air-conditioned with open air flowing through in the upper areas of the ceiling, large windows and double doors that open to the front porch and view of the ocean. All open areas are screened including screen doors. There is no glass in the windows. The house has an open concept with bars and weather resistant shades on windows in main room and bathroom and wooden shutters in bedroom. There are magnificent views of the ocean from all areas inside the house.
The house has a very large living/dining/kitchen space is open concept. The living area has a sofa that can convert into a trundle bed supplying two very comfortable over sized twin beds.
Large light-filled bedroom with an enormous window with an amazing view of the ocean and stars at night from the bed. The bedroom windows are screened and have wooden shutters. This room can be completely locked and shuttered separate from the house so that tenants can keep their valuables even more secure in this room. The room is furnished with 2 twin size beds that can be moved together to be a king size bed, wardrobe, bureau, television with claro cable.
A signal booster is available for use so that cell phones will receive reception in the house. Cell phone coverage is also good in the yard. Internet is provided by Alfa and backed up by a small tower behind the house.
Gravity feed pressurized water is supplied to house by water tanks that have to be refilled when empty. The cost is $40 for tanks to be refilled and the quantity of water is 1400 gallons per refill. I recommend purchasing 5 gallon jugs of water for which the kitchen has a stand with spout for drinking water. Each one cost a little over $2.
Monthly renters are responsible for filling the house water tanks although they will be full upon arrival, for cleaning the yard and house and for trash pick up fee which is $5 per pick up. The monthly rent for the eco cottage ranges from $600 to $525 monthly. I use a local family with several members who speak English to manage my property. There is also a Canadian couple who live on the beach who offer property management services and run a restaurant on the beach. One is also a massage therapist and offers massages on the beach as well.
There is a restaurant on this beach, walking distance from the house and another several kilometers down the beach with a swimming pool which can be used when not rented by guests for a fee.
To find my place on google, type in Solar Beach Cottage/Turtle Santuary. You will find it south of Salinas Grandes village.
